Physical information is inversely proportional to entropy—as the universe travels inexorably through time towards its “heat death”—maximum entropy, a perfectly even distribution of energy—structures inevitably break down, and physical information diminishes. But don't confuse entropy in thermodynamics with the concept of the same name in communications theory. These are certainly related, but they are not the same. See Kenneth Sayre's Cybernetics and the Philosophy of Mind (Humanities Press, New Jersey, 1976) for a more technical discussion of information, matter and energy, including the concepts of entropy. |
